About Aga Carpets

Having been born into a family that for generations has been in the trade of carpets, I grew up surrounded with a constant presence of the most beautiful handmade carpets from all across the world being displayed around my family home. From pure silk pictorials 'Hunting Scenes' and 'Tree of Life' to colourful, geometric pieces representing regions and cities all throughout Asia.

It was normal for me, growing up. There was nothing unusual about my father, uncles and grandfather all being carpet dealers and having shops stocked from floor to ceiling which I used as my personal playground. Jumping from one pile to another, not understanding why Aladdin could make his carpet fly but I couldn't.

Only recently, since having stepped into the industry as a fourth generation Aga, I have realised how unique and niche of a trade I have been brought up in.

The majority of people see a carpet as nothing more than some material to cover the floor with. It can improve the look of a place by making it seem less empty, and also has the added benefit of providing insulation.

Then, there are those who view a handmade carpet in the same regard as a painting; as a piece of art. They appreciate the patience, accuracy, skill and vision which goes into the creative process. They see value in an individual formulating an intricate design, dying the wool and silks and then setting out to complete it inch by inch, knot by knot, over a period of many months.

My appreciation for this industry grows every day as I learn of the high level of craft and artistry required at the heart of it all. It is a beautiful industry which takes up a small section of the art world. The underrated missing link in reflecting your personality and cultured touch, when transforming a space to make your own, and with over a hundred years of experience.
